EXAMPLES OF NUTRITION INTERVENTIONS BASED ON A SETTINGS APPROACH

EARLY EDUCATION AND CARE

There are two types of food provisioning in early education and care; food is either cooked on site or parents are required to provide all food. The Department of Health has developed the Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Guidelines for Early Childhood to assist these settings in establishing supportive environments for health (www.health.gov.au/internet/main/publishing.nsf/content/phd-early-childhood-nutrition-resources). Examples of programs that have been developed include:

• Munch and Move (NSW Government & Heart Foundation 2018) <www.healthykids.nsw.gov.au/campaigns-programs/about-munch-move.aspx>

• Learning Eating Active Play Sleep (LEAPS) (Nutrition Australia QLD 2018) <https://training.naqnutrition.org/courses/#/filter/early-years/leaps>

PRIMARY AND HIGH SCHOOL SETTINGS

National and state guidelines have been developed to govern the provisioning of food on school grounds and, in particular, by school canteens and tuckshops. These guidelines stipulate the types of foods and beverages that should be sold in the canteen and, in some cases, appropriate foods for fundraising activities. Examples include:

• The National Guidelines for Healthy Food and Drinks Supplied in School Canteens (Australian Government 2014) <www.health.gov.au/internet/main/publishing.nsf/content/5FFB6A30ECEE9321CA257BF0001DAB17/$File/Canteen%20guidelines.pdf>

• SMART choices based in Queensland (Queensland Government 2016) <https://education.qld.gov.au/student/Documents/smart-choices-strategy.pdf>

• Western Australian School Canteen Association StarCAP accreditation program (WASCA 2018) <www.waschoolcanteens.org.au/star-cap/>

• In New Zealand, the Heart Foundation has developed Fuelled4life (Heart Foundation 2018) <www.fuelled4life.org.nz/>.

SPORTING VENUES

Participation in sport is strongly encouraged for children and adolescents and sporting clubs and venues are another site where healthy food provisioning can be modelled. The national Good Sports program provides resources for clubs to provide healthier food choices, promote mental health and minimise the consumption of alcohol <http://goodsports.com.au/this-is-good-sports/>.
